What to engage in at Mirima Kibale lodge
While at mirima lodge, they are several activities to engage in that includes;
Chimpanzee tracking
Whether you choose standard tracking or habituation, the day begins the same way. You leave Mirima Lode in the morning and drive to Kanyanchu for the park briefing. Then you head into Kibale on foot with a ranger guide and start looking and listening.
Bigodi wetland walks
A guided walk in Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary takes you through papyrus, woodland, and village-edge habitat near Kibale National Park. It is one of the easiest and most rewarding half-day outings from Mirima. You are not heading deep into the forest for a long trek. You are walking at a gentler pace, stopping often to look, listen, and let the guide point out what is easy to miss on your own.
What makes Bigodi worth your time is the mix. There is birdlife, yes, and this walk is especially good for guests who enjoy birds. But you do not need to be a birder to enjoy it. You may also see monkeys, thick papyrus channels, small farms at the wetland edge, and the local life around the sanctuary. The walk feels quieter than chimp tracking and is easier underfoot, but it still gives you a strong sense of this part of Kibale.
From Mirima Kibale Lodge, the walk works well as a half-day excursion before or after your chimp experience, or as part of a two- or three-night stay around Kibale. It adds a different side of the landscape with less canopy, more open wetland, more bird calls, and more local context. If chimp tracking is the main reason you came, Bigodi adds a different side of Kibale without asking for another tiring park experience.
Birdwatching
Mirima works well as a birding base because it puts more than one habitat within reach. From here, you can bird inside Kibale National Park on the Kanyanchu and Sebitoli side, head out to Bigodi Wetland for papyrus and edge-habitat species, or keep things lighter around the crater-lake country near the lodge. That range is what makes birding here rewarding. You are not relying on one trail or one habitat to carry the whole experience.
The lodge itself adds to that picture. Mirima sits on a forested ridge above three crater lakes, with flower gardens, shrubs, and a small forest by the lake where guests can take a quiet nature walk. So even without heading into the park, there is good birding around the lodge and nearby. That is especially welcome for guests who enjoy birds but do not want every outing to feel like a dedicated birding session.
Across the wider Kibale area, birders may keep an eye out for species such as the Great Blue Turaco, black-and-white-casqued hornbill, eastern nicator, blue-breasted kingfisher, and, deeper in the forest, green-breasted pitta. Some guests want a focused birding morning. Others simply want to notice more of the landscape while they are here. Mirima works for both. It gives you a comfortable base for the internationally known birding around Kibale, with the added bonus that the birding can start right outside your room.

How to get to mirima kibale lodge
Mirima kibale lodge can be accessed by road via Fort Portal, or by flying to Kasese Airstrip and transferring up into the hills. By road, the lodge is about 20 km taking around 30 minutes from Fort Portal. If you’re flying, Kasese Airstrip is about 56 km taking around 1.5 hours away by road.
Mirima sits in the crater-lake highlands outside Fort Portal close enough to feel easy once you’re in western Uganda, and well-placed for early forest mornings and slow afternoons back at the lake.
Visitors taking the chimpanzee tracking activity in kibale national park, the visitor centre briefing point is about 16 km taking around 20 minutes from the lodge, close enough that the morning feels steady, not rushed. Driving times can vary with road conditions.
