Mwamba kelele lodge is a budget accommodation located in fort portal at the edge of Mwamba crater lake. The lodge is an ideal escape for travelers ready to explore crater lakes, chimpanzee tracking and community walks. The surrounding areas offers scenic views and vegetation. Mwamba kelele lodge is a few meters from Bigodi wetland sanctuary and kibale national park the home of chimpanzees.

When was Mwamba kelele lodge opened

The accommodation was built and opened in 2016 under the kelele Africa project to support sustainable tourism in the area.

The lodge features 8 cottages with spacious verandas over looking the lake and garden, dinning, balcony, single rooms, twin rooms, deluxe rooms, dormitory rooms and a welcoming reception.

Boat cruise

Visitors can enjoy boat cruise on any of the crater lakes with views of the beautiful shores.

Chimpanzee tracking

Visitors participate in the chimpanzee tracking at kibale national park where they track chimps in the tropical forests. Chimpanzees are considered our closest relatives because of sharing 98% genes with humans. Visitors encounter chimpanzees up close in their natural tropical forests of kibale.

They are led by our professional guides to track different chimpanzee groups to learn their unique behaviors being led by the dormant male. They are other primates to spot in kibale forest such as the black and white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys and L’hoest monkeys.

Birding tours

 Engage in birding trips around kibale national park and Bigodi wetland areas where a variety of birds are spotted such as green breasted pitta, Ross’s turaco, blue headed sun birds, yellow throated nicator, dusky blue flycatcher, African emerald cuckoo, great blue turaco and much more.

Crater lakes tour

The area is rich in crater lakes, there are arranged visits to lakes with spectacular views such as nyinambuga lake, nyamirima, nyabikere, nkuruba and others.

Amabere ga nyinamwiru caves

The site carries a strong natural blend of nature that will make you to come back again. It is a wonderland and cultural site that existed in the 14th century and it is believed that it was a home for demi gods that had supernatural powers of the batembuzi dynasty where the Tooro and Bunyoro kingdoms originates from.

Amabere ganyinamwiru word means the “Breasts of Nyinamwiru’ in their local dialect. The cultural site features unique attractions such as breast like features that produces water that forms stalagmites and stalactites, waterfalls and crater lakes. The site carries a mystical story that has existed for generations.

The caves are so supernatural with different features such as dog breasts, granary and hiking to the hills.

Game drive in queen Elizabeth national park

From the lodge, it takes about 2 hours to reach queen Elizabeth national park where you can easily do a morning and evening game drive viewing animals such as elephants, lions, buffalo, antelopes and many more.

Rwenzori mountains hiking

It takes about 3 hours via kasenda to reach Rwenzori mountains gate; you can do a day hike to lake mahoma in Rwenzori where you enjoy a breath of the mountains of the moon.

How to get there

You can access Mwamba kelele lodge from Kampala by road, it takes about 5 to 6 hours drive. By air transport from kajjansi airstrip to kasese airstrip it takes about 1 hour flight and about 1 hour drive from kasese airstrip to reach the lodge. Visitors that plan for chimpanzee tracking at Mwamba kelele national park takes a morning 45-minute drive to the briefing point.
