Where is Cheptegei peak located?
Cheptegei peak standing at 4,907m asl is located between Alexandra peak 5,091m asl and Moebius peak 4,917m asl on Mount Stanley in the Rwenzori mountains of the moon.

When was Cheptegei peak discovered and named?
Cheptegei peak is a newly named peak that was named after Ugandan world 10,000 Km marathon champion Joshua Cheptegei who trekked the Rwenzori mountains and summited Margherita peak in December 2020 alongside an expedition led by the Uganda Tourism board CEO Lily Ajarova dubbed Explore Uganda funded by UNDP in a bid to promote adventure tourism in Uganda.
The peak has however been in existence just like many other beautiful unnamed peaks in the Rwenzori mountains some of which have never been summitted.
Joshua Cheptegei is a Ugandan long-distance runner. Cheptegei is the current world record holder for the 5000 metres and the 10,000 metres, and holds the world best time over the 15 kilometres distance. Cheptegei is the reigning Olympic champion in the 5000 m and the reigning three-time World champion in the 10,000 m. Cheptegei also won a gold medal in the 5000 m and 10,000 m at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and at the 2019 IAAF World Cross Country Championships.
Cheptegei is the tenth man in history to hold the 5000 m and 10,000 m world records concurrently, both set in 2020. This makes him an inspiration that led to the Uganda Tourism Board having this peak named after him.
Climbing of Cheptegei Peak on Mount Stanley in the Rwenzori mountains
Cheptegei peak is a non technical and relatively easier peak to climb and summit in the Rwenzori mountains at 4,907m asl. Cheptegei peak is best summitted from Elena camp along the Central circuit trail and Margherita camp along the Kilembe trail.
Cheptegei peak can also be summited from Irene lakes camp along the Bukurungu wilderness camping trail going right of the snowline before climbing down to the Stanley glacier.
Climbing Cheptegei peak 4,907m asl still gives you a technical climbing experience in the Rwenzori mountains as you get to use climbing ropes, harness, ice screws, crampons crossing or bypassing the Stanley glacier before climbing towards DR Congo to go left past Moebius peak to reach Cheptegei peak on Mount Stanley.
