Lake Nkuruba

Lake Nkuruba is a splendid volcanic crater lake located 25 km south of Fort Portal in western Uganda. It was formed thousands of years ago by violent volcanic activity, it is uniquely famous for being one of the only crater lakes in the region whose lush, ancient tropical forest habitat remains completely untouched by widespread deforestation. The lake spans roughly three hectares with a maximum depth of 13 meters. It functions as an eco-tourism hub managed by the Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve & Community Campsite.

This Reserve and its lush forest are a home to several bird species such as the black and white casqued hornbills, Great blue Turaco, speckled Tinkerbirds, Double-toothed Barbets, African Green Pigeons, Klaas’s Cuckoo kingfishers and bee-eaters, thus making the site a true birder’s haven. You can also find some primates in lake Nkuruba Nature reserve such as black and white colobus monkeys, red colobus monkeys, bush babies and other small primates. The lake is surrounded by a tropical rainforest where trees grow densely up to 50m tall creating an almost impenetrable vegetation underneath them, it provides good sheltering grounds for different species including birds, monkeys and bushbucks

Part of the profits from this Ecotourism Project goes into supporting Nature conservation and improving the livelihoods of the local community members.

Tourist Activities to Do in Lake Nkuruba

Primate Encounter & Forest Walks

Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve is a community-driven ecotourism project located 25km south of Fort Portal. It bids visitors immersive cultural experiences, including traditional dance performances by the Nkuruba Development Youth Group and authentic guided village walks that directly support local conservation and women’s craft initiatives.

Lake Nkuruba goes beyond typical sightseeing by integrating travelers into the daily life and conservation of the local Ndali-Kasenda region.

Key Community & Cultural Initiatives include

Nkuruba Development Youth Group

This talented youth group performs energetic traditional Ugandan dances and cultural shows on the reserve grounds. Performances take place every Saturday and Sunday from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, providing an entertaining income stream for local youth.

Traditional Hand Crafts

Visitors can purchase authentic Ugandan handicrafts made directly by local women. All sales proceeds go straight to the female artisans, promoting financial independence and female empowerment within the village.

Immersive Cultural Homestays

Travelers looking for deeper cultural immersion can book overnight stays with local families. Guests share a traditional home-cooked Ugandan meal, sleep under the same roof, and pay accommodation fees directly to the host family.

Community Coffee Farm Visits

The reserve supports a local coffee collective. Visitors can take a 3-to-5-hour guided tour to the Nkuruba Coffee Farm to learn about organic coffee farming and processing while buying freshly roasted beans straight from the farmers.

Rwaihamba Village Market Tours

This market is located just 2km from the reserve, Rwaihamba is one of the largest village markets in Uganda. Guided walks allow travellers to engage with local traders, navigate rural commerce, and experience true community life.

How To Get to Lake Nkuruba

To get to Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve, you must first travel to Fort Portal Tourism City in Western Uganda, which serves as the main gateway to the crater lakes region. From Fort Portal, the lake is situated about 25 km south

By Public Transport (Taxi/Matatu)

You can go to the Kamwenge taxi stage in Fort Portal city center. Board a shared taxi heading towards Rwaihamba or Kamwenge, and inform the conductor to drop you off at the Lake Nkuruba trading center / junction.

By Boda-Boda (Motorcycle Taxi)

For a faster and more direct trip, hire a registered boda-boda directly from Fort Portal. It takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes to reach the camp entry point.

By Private Vehicle

A standard 2WD vehicle can handle the main road during dry conditions, but a 4WD vehicle is highly recommended during rainy seasons as the dirt access roads can become very slippery.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Lake Nkuruba

The best time to visit Lake Nkuruba Nature Reserve is during the dry seasons from December to February and June to August. These months offer the driest weather, making nature trails and chimpanzee trekking in nearby Kibale National Park much easier and less muddy. This is widely considered the peak window. Skies are always clear during this period, making it perfect for photography. The forest trails are dry and easy to navigate.
