Trek details

Have an early morning breakfast preferably a heavy breakfast to prepare for this physically demanding Rwenzori mountains day trek through the Central circuit trail.

Check out of your hotel early enough and transfer to Mihunga gate to start of your trek by 7 am in the morning.

You will register with Rwenzori mountains national park and be briefed by your guide.

This Rwenzori mountains day trek starts off at 1,651m asl at Mihunga gate aiming to reach Lake Mahoma at 3,000m asl.

After briefing with all your trekking gear, start the trek descending down to meet the Mahoma nature trail junction as you continue to climb through the tropical montane forest.

After a steep climb, descend down to cross Kyoho bridge as you enjoy the roars of the stream down as it joins the Mubuku river.

Climb up from the Kyoho river valley walking steadily through the forest  before crossing the Mahoma river bridge.

After crossing the Mahoma bridge, trek for afew meters to the resting point for your packed lunch.

This area is a famous habitat for the 3 horned Johnson’s chameleones and on any lucky day your guide will spot one for you.

After a 15 minutes rest, start off climbing with views of the portal peaks and sounds of chimpanzee calls and elephants across the Mahoma ridge on a lucky day.

You will spot black and white colobus monkeys, vervet monkeys, the rwenzori turaco, rock hyrax, etc along your trek.

After about 1.5 hours from the resting point, arrive at Nyabitaba hut for a rest. The trek from Mihunga gate to Nyabitaba hut is 6 Km.

After a 15 minutes rest, proceed with your trek to Lake Mahoma going beyond the junctions to Kurt Scharfer bridge and Guy Yeoman

Trek for 1 hour to 1.5 hours through the bamboo zone with views of Mount Kinyangoma, Portal peaks and Mount Baker far beyond on a clear day.

Along the trail you will hear calls from the brightly coloured Rwenzori Turaco as you head to Lake Mahoma.

The distance from Nyabitaba hut to Lake Mahoma is 2.5 Km.

Arrive at Lake Mahoma to enjoy the beautiful views across the lake with sighting of water birds floating across the lake, shadows of the mountains across creating a perfect photo scene for you.

Lake Mahoma is a 27 meters deep beautiful glacial lake accessible on a day trek to the Rwenzori mountains.

After resting and capturing enough memories, start your descend down to Nyabitaba hut and subsequently down to Mihunga gate to end your 1 day Rwenzori mountains hike to Lake Mahoma.

The descend down from Lake Mahoma 3,000m asl to Mihunga gate takes 3-4 hours.

The 1 day Rwenzori mountains hike to Lake Mahoma takes you to the deepest and nearest lake in the Rwenzori mountains at 3,000m asl just 2.5km from Nyabitaba camp the first camp along the Central circuit Rwenzori mountains climbing route.

This day hike is a 17km roundtrip from start to finish and it’s usually done in 8-9 hours.
