In the afternoon we arrive at Shira Camp 1, which sits at the edge of the flat, enormous Shira Plateau, with beautiful views of the mountain from here. After being served a warm meal, our team will set up your evening so you can enjoy the sundown views over the African plains below.

The trail is easy-going and the route crosses ancient lava formations and moorland with giant lobelias. After lunch at Shira 2 Camp, you will head directly upwards to Moir Camp, located beneath a large volcanic ridge. This higher altitude camp is a great place to familiarize for beautiful views of the entire Shira Plateau and even as far away as Mount Meru. After a short break proceed to Barranco camp. Day 5: Barranco Camp 3,960 m) to Karanga Camp (4035m).

Today will start by climbing up the Barranco Wall. This is a steep climb but enjoyable with some of the best views on Kilimanjaro. After you reach the top, you will walk through rolling terrain and small valleys, reaching Karanga Camp, a quiet area for rest and to acclimatize.

You will arrive in time for a hot lunch and you will spend the afternoon resting, hydrating and preparing for the following day’s ascension. In the evening, you will have a gourmet dinner under the stars and wind down in order to rest your weary bones for an early night.

Trekking time: 4-5 hours

Day 6: Karanga Camp (4035m) to Barafu Camp(4673m)

Today is another half day ascending to Barafu Camp. Once again lunch is taken in this high camp, allowing plenty of time to relax before the summit bid. Desolate alpine desert and, at times, strong winds rip over this camp, yet in the evening’s splendid views of Mawenzi peak are the norm. A relatively early dinner is taken before resting for the evening. Overnight at Barafu Camp.

Trekking time: 12-16 hours

Day 7: From Barafu camp (4673m) to Summit to Uhuru peak(5895m) then descend to Mweka Camp (3100m)

On this day, depart just before midnight for the final summit bid. Patience and persistence is the name of game to reach the summit, and this is the coldest, windiest section of your adventure. Most likely by dawn, as the first rays of light start to appear across the Tanzanian landscape, you will arrive near the edge at Stella Point, at an altitude of 18,652ft. Here, you are rewarded with the most glorious sunrise you have ever seen appearing over Mawenzi Peak. Ascending via Stella Point affords a relatively short final section to Uhuru Peak, the Roof of Africa! Take as many pictures as you can! After a short celebration at the summit, begin the ebullient trek down. Go slowly and enjoy the wonderful rainforest scenery as you head towards Mweka Camp, arriving before dusk. With every step the air has more and more oxygen so although your legs will be like jelly your heart will be light.
