Most routes involve one connection, typically in Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Kigali, or Dubai.

The total travel time from Johannesburg to Entebbe is typically nine to thirteen hours door to door, depending on the layover.

Flights from Johannesburg (O.R. Tambo International)

Johannesburg has the most direct options for Uganda. RwandAir operates a well-regarded route from Johannesburg to Entebbe via Kigali, with competitive pricing and a Kigali layover that is typically under two hours.

Ethiopian Airlines connects Johannesburg to Entebbe via Addis Ababa on daily schedules. Kenya Airways operates via Nairobi and is a reliable option with good timing. Emirates connects via Dubai for those who prefer a longer layover in a transit airport with more facilities.

Flights from Cape Town (Cape Town International)

From Cape Town, the most common routing is Cape Town to Johannesburg and then connecting to Entebbe. Ethiopian Airlines operates a Cape Town to Addis Ababa to Entebbe service that avoids the Johannesburg leg entirely. RwandAir also offers Cape Town connections via Johannesburg or directly via Kigali depending on the schedule. Total travel time from Cape Town to Entebbe is typically eleven to fourteen hours including connections.

Flights from Durban (King Shaka International)

From Durban, the routing typically goes through Johannesburg before connecting to Entebbe via whichever airline and transit hub you choose. Ethiopian Airlines and Kenya Airways are the most commonly used from the Durban starting point, with Johannesburg as the connection. Allow enough transit time at least two hours between the domestic Durban to Johannesburg leg and the international departure, and do not cut this margin if you value your peace of mind on travel day.

The Kigali Alternative

One routing option that South African travelers often overlook is flying into Kigali, Rwanda, rather than Entebbe. RwandAir connects Johannesburg directly to Kigali in approximately four hours a genuinely short flight and from Kigali you can drive to the southern sectors of Bwindi (Rushaga and Nkuringo) via the Cyanika border crossing in four to five hours. This routing is particularly efficient for travelers specifically headed to the southern Bwindi sectors, where the Kigali gateway is actually closer than Entebbe by a significant margin.

You fly in to Kigali, trek at Volcanoes first, cross into Uganda for Bwindi, and fly home from Entebbe.

Getting from Entebbe to Bwindi - Two Options

Once you land at Entebbe, the gorillas are still some distance away. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is in southwestern Uganda, and understanding the two main ways to reach it helps you choose the approach that suits your itinerary and budget.

Option 1 — Road Transfer (Scenic, Affordable, Time-Consuming)

The overland drive from Entebbe to Bwindi takes approximately six to nine hours depending on traffic, road conditions, and which sector of Bwindi you are headed to. The road passes through Kampala (allow an hour for city traffic), through the tea and coffee growing highlands west of Fort Portal, through the Kigezi highlands toward Kabale, and then on the final steep descent into the Bwindi valley. It is a genuinely beautiful drive rolling green hills, crater lakes, equatorial vegetation, and roadside market towns but it is long.

Option 2 — Domestic Flight to Kihihi or Kisoro Airstrip

A domestic flight from Entebbe to Kihihi airstrip (for Buhoma and Ruhija sectors of Bwindi) or Kisoro airstrip (for Rushaga, Nkuringo, and Mgahinga) takes approximately one hour to one hour and fifteen minutes. From the airstrip, a road transfer of one to one and a half hours brings you to your lodge near the park. Total transfer time from Entebbe to lodge: under three hours, door to door.

Aerolink Uganda operates daily scheduled flights on these routes, and the price ranges from approximately $230 to $400 per person one way on a scheduled service. Charter flights are available for groups or those wanting complete flexibility on timing but cost significantly more between $1,500 and $3,000 per charter flight depending on distance and the number of passengers.

The Kigali Road Option

As mentioned in the flights section, flying into Kigali and driving to southern Bwindi (Rushaga or Nkuringo sector) via the Cyanika border crossing is a legitimate and efficient alternative to arriving via Entebbe. The drive from Kigali to the Cyanika border takes about two hours. From the border to the Rushaga sector of Bwindi is roughly another hour. Total Kigali to lodge: approximately three to four hours.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking Packages for South Africans

The right package for you depends on how many days you have, what else you want to experience beyond the gorillas, and where your budget sits. Here are the most practical options for South African travelers at different time and budget levels.

3-Day Gorilla Trekking Package

This is the minimum viable gorilla trekking itinerary from South Africa and it works well for travelers with very limited time or who are adding gorillas to a broader East Africa trip rather than making Uganda the entire focus. You fly from Johannesburg to Entebbe on an evening flight, arrive in Entebbe and rest overnight, take a domestic flight to Kihihi or Kisoro the following morning (or drive, if you have a full day available), reach your lodge near Bwindi in time for afternoon rest, trek on the morning of Day 3, and transfer back to Entebbe for your return flight to South Africa.

Day 1: Depart Johannesburg. Fly Johannesburg to Entebbe (typically via Kigali or Addis Ababa). Arrive Entebbe. Transfer to a lakeside hotel for overnight rest.

Day 2: Morning domestic flight from Entebbe to Kihihi or Kisoro airstrip (approximately 1 hour 15 minutes). Road transfer to lodge near Bwindi. Ranger briefing on gorilla trekking rules. Afternoon rest. Dinner at lodge.

Day 3: Early wake-up. Transfer to gorilla sector headquarters for 7:30am briefing. Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Return to lodge for lunch. Afternoon transfer to airstrip for domestic flight back to Entebbe. Overnight Entebbe hotel for next-morning departure.

Day 4: Depart Entebbe. Return flight to Johannesburg.

5-Day Uganda Gorilla and Wildlife Safari

The most common combination is gorilla trekking at Bwindi plus two nights at Queen Elizabeth National Park for game drives and the Kazinga Channel boat safari. This gives you both the primate forest experience and the classic East African savannah game drive — two very different sides of Uganda’s wildlife story.

Day 1: Fly Johannesburg to Entebbe. Arrive Entebbe, transfer to lakeside hotel.

Day 2: Morning domestic flight Entebbe to Kasese (for Queen Elizabeth National Park). Transfer to lodge. Afternoon Kazinga Channel boat safari — hippos, crocodiles, elephants at the water’s edge.

Day 3: Full day at Queen Elizabeth. Morning game drive in the Kasenyi Plains for lions, elephants, and Uganda kob. Afternoon drive to Ishasha sector for tree-climbing lions, or optional night game drive.
