Mandela National Stadium, which is popularly known as Namboole Stadium, is Uganda’s premier national sports facility and the country’s most iconic venue for international football, athletics, and large-scale national events. Located in Namboole, Kampala, the stadium serves as the official home ground of the Uganda national football team The Uganda Cranes and stands as a symbol of national pride and sporting excellence.
It was originally opened in 1997 and named in Honor of Nelson Mandela; the stadium was developed to provide Uganda with a modern, international-standard sports arena capable of hosting continental and global competitions. Over the years, it has hosted AFCON qualifiers, World Cup qualifiers, CECAFA tournaments, national athletics championships, state functions, concerts, and major public celebrations.
Hoima is set to host AFCON games as one of the major stadiums in Uganda after Madela stadium (Namboole). Hoima City Stadium is a modern regional sports facility in Hoima City, Western Uganda, designed to support football, athletics, and large-scale community and national events. Strategically located in the Albertine Graben region, the stadium is positioned to serve as a key sports and events hub for Western Uganda and the wider Great Lakes region.
Hoima City Stadium is intended to meet CAF and FIFA standards, with a focus on hosting domestic league matches, regional tournaments, youth competitions, and national celebrations. The facility is also intended to play a complementary role in Uganda’s preparations for hosting major continental events, including AFCON 2027.
The Opening Match will be played on Saturday, 19 June 2027 and the Final on Saturday, 17 July 2027. The dates were approved by the FIFA Council recently held in Vancouver, Canada. CAF will announce the Country that will host the Opening Match and the Final in the due course. The TotalEnergies CAF AFCON PAMOJA 2027 is the first AFCON to be hosted by three countries, presenting a unique opportunity for CAF and African football to reach over 400 million people in East Africa region.
