Where to Go for a Honeymoon Safari in Rwanda
Bujuku Eco Tours2026-07-03T16:16:30+03:00Where to Go for a Honeymoon Safari in Rwanda: Rwanda is one of Africa’s most sought-after honeymoon destinations over the past decade, and not because anyone decided to market it that way. This is because couples who choose it over the standard beach-and-pool honeymoon come back and tell people.
The gorilla trekking gives them a shared experience neither of them could have anticipated. The lodges near Volcanoes National Park, with their fireplaces and open-air bathtubs and views of the Virunga peaks, gave them somewhere genuinely beautiful to return to after the exertion. And Lake Kivu, at the end of the circuit, grants them the stillness that every honeymoon eventually needs.
Why Rwanda Works as a Honeymoon Destination
Rwanda is one of the safest and cleanest countries in Africa. The capital Kigali regularly features on lists of Africa’s most livable cities. Roads are maintained. Public spaces are clean. The country is politically stable in a way that is not universal in the region. For couples planning an international honeymoon who want the adventure of Africa without the uncertainty that comes with some destinations, Rwanda removes most of those concerns before the itinerary even begins.
The luxury lodges near Volcanoes National Park are among the best in Africa, not just by regional standards but by global ones. Bisate Lodge, One & Only Gorilla’s Nest, Singita Kwitonda, and Wilderness Sabyinyo are properties that were built around the idea that spending a significant amount on a gorilla permit should come with accommodation that matches that experience in quality and in intimacy.
Destinations for Honeymoon in Rwanda
Volcanoes National Park
The gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park is the centerpiece of almost every Rwanda honeymoon itinerary, and for good reason. The park is situated in Rwanda’s northwest, two and a half hours from Kigali, on the slopes of six Virunga volcanoes.
Twelve habituated gorilla families live within its borders, and each day up to 96 permits are issued for visitors to spend one hour with one of those families. The trek itself takes anywhere from one to five hours depending on where the family has moved overnight. You walk through bamboo forest and dense vegetation, often with cloud at your level on the slopes, mist collecting on your jacket, and the sounds of the forest becoming the only thing you can hear. Then the trackers, who went in at dawn, radio back. The guide tells you to be quiet and moves the group forward. And then you see them.
Gorilla permits cost USD 1,500 per person. The Rwanda Development Board issues 96 per day and they sell out months in advance for peak season travel. Book permits before you book flights and before you book lodges. The permit date is the fixed point around which everything else is arranged.
Golden Monkey Tracking
Most couples staying two nights near Volcanoes National Park use the second morning for golden monkey trekking, which is a different kind of experience from the gorilla encounter and a good complement to it.
Golden monkeys are small, fast, and live in the bamboo forest at the lower elevations of the park. A permit costs USD 100 per person and the trek departs at 7:00 AM from the same Kinigi briefing point as the gorilla trek.
Where gorilla trekking is slow, patient, and often quietly emotional, golden monkey trekking is energetic and entertaining.
Lake Kivu
Every Rwanda honeymoon itinerary eventually needs a change of gear, and Lake Kivu provides it. The lake is located on Rwanda’s western border with the DRC, about two hours south of Musanze, at 1,460 meters above sea level.
It is the sixth-largest lake in Africa, dotted with wooded islands, and its high altitude keeps the water temperature cool and the surrounding air noticeably lighter than the mountain forests further north. After the altitude and exertion of gorilla trekking, the lake feels like the right answer.
Nyungwe Forest
For honeymooners with ten days or more, Nyungwe Forest National Park in Rwanda’s southwest adds a third very different landscape to the itinerary. The park covers 1,019 square kilometres of ancient montane rainforest in the country’s most remote corner, on the border with Burundi.
The accommodation closest to the park, One&Only Nyungwe House, sits within a working tea plantation bordering the forest and is one of the most beautifully positioned lodges in Rwanda. The rooms look out over the plantation rows toward the forest canopy with the Albertine Rift hills beyond.
Chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe is available to couples and gives a forest primate encounter that is different in character from gorilla trekking: louder, faster, more chaotic, and in a denser forest.
Where to Stay Near Volcanoes National Park During your honeymoon
Bisate Lodge
Bisate Lodge is located within a natural volcanic bowl near Volcanoes National Park, about fifteen minutes from the Kinigi briefing point. Six forest villas are built into the hillside, each with views toward the volcanic peaks and a wrapped around terrace that makes morning coffee a considered experience.
One & Only Gorilla’s Nest
One &Only Gorilla’s Nest, closer to the town of Kinigi, offers a more enclosed and private experience. The property sits on forested land with the Virunga peaks visible above the canopy. Suites are spacious and designed around fireplace-centered sitting areas with views into the surrounding trees.
Wilderness Sabyinyo
Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, now managed by Wilderness, in the foothills of the Virunga mountains near the park boundary. Six stone cottages and two suites have four-poster beds, fireplaces, and terraces facing the mountains. The lodge was originally built by the Sabyinyo Community Livelihood Association and continues to operate as a community partnership, which means a proportion of every stay goes to the surrounding community.
What to Consider while Planning Your Rwanda Honeymoon Safari
When to Go
The dry seasons, June to September and December to February, offer the most reliable trekking conditions and the best lodge availability planning periods. The dry months at Volcanoes National Park bring firmer trails, clearer mornings, and more manageable conditions on the gorilla trek.
The wet seasons, March to May and October to November, bring more atmospheric forest conditions and lower accommodation prices, and the gorilla encounter itself is unchanged.
For honeymooners who want the most predictable conditions, the dry season is the safer choice. For those with flexible dates and tighter budgets, November and May offer the best value.
How Long to Spend
A 5-to-7-day Rwanda honeymoon covers Kigali, two nights near Volcanoes National Park for gorilla and golden monkey trekking, and two nights at Lake Kivu. A ten-day itinerary adds Nyungwe Forest and gives more unhurried time at each destination.
Two weeks allows Akagera National Park in the east for a savannah game drive element, which some couples want to add to the forest and lake circuit. Rwanda is compact enough that none of these extensions feel rushed if the transfer days are used well rather than treated purely as logistical segments.
Booking Lead Times
Gorilla permits should be booked six to twelve months in advance for dry season honeymoon travel. Luxury lodges near Volcanoes National Park, particularly Bisate and Singita Kwitonda, often have long lead times for their best suite categories.
For travel in July, August, or December, begin the booking process at least nine months ahead. For travel in low season months, three to six months is usually sufficient.
- Gorilla permit: USD 1,500 per person, issued by the Rwanda Development Board. Book through a licensed Rwanda tour operator.
- Golden monkey permit: USD 100 per person. Often available with shorter lead times than gorilla permits.
- Canopy walk at Nyungwe: approximately USD 60 per person. No advance booking required.
- Most luxury lodges include all meals and usually one guided activity per day in their rates. Check what is included before comparing properties.
- Kigali to Volcanoes National Park is 2.5 hours by road. Volcanoes to Lake Kivu is 2 hours. All transfers within a Rwanda honeymoon itinerary are manageable by road and do not require domestic flights.
