Idjwi island in DRC is a unique island located in the middle of Lake Kivu. It is 70 meters long covering 340 square kilometers forming south Kivu province neighboring Rwanda. The island inhabits the pygmies and Hutus people. Idjwi island has scenic landscapes and is named among the largest islands in central and East Africa.
History of idjwi island in DRC
For many years Idjwi island had ancient kingdoms that included the Bahavu clan society and the Bashi tribe. Like in any other African tradition society, this island had a kingdom in the late 18th century between 1780 and 1840. Today, the island is split into two chiefdoms namely Rubenga in the north, and Ntambuka in the south. Pygmies are found in both kingdoms, but more so in Rubenga.
The island became an important escape gem for the refugees during the 1994 Rwanda Genocide, where they sought safety. Also, during the 2013 M23 rebels in congo, thousands of people fled to this island for safety.

The island has got various activities for the community to engage in to earn a living. They include;
Sand mining
Sand mining is one of the common activities at this island, most near by cities like Bukavu and Goma have benefited from the sand mined from the island. Mining has created a source of income to this community.
Visiting island schools
The island has 311 schools and of which 203 are primary and 108 are secondary However, they are poorly attended due to poverty and high school fees.
Fishing
The island provides fishing options by use of local boats that are owned by individuals. They practice fishing which is a source of food.
Farming
The island has fertile soils that favour the natives to practice agriculture where they plant crops such as cassava, yams, beans, bananas and coffee.
Nature walks
Visitors can enjoy nature walks through a community tour, learning about their culture and ways of living.
How do I get to idjwi island
The island can be accessed by boat through designed ports whether coming from Rwanda or Congo. For travelers coming from Rwanda, use bukavu port and get on a speed boat to the island taking about 1-2 hours. Also, from Goma boats are accessed on the northern idjwi taking about 1-3 hours on water.
Challenges affected by people living in idjwi island
The island faces challenges that decline social and economic development. Among these are political instabilities from neighboring countries, lack of adequate health care services, over population and soil erosion.
