Sempaya Hot springs

The Sempaya Hot Springs are among the unique features to explore on Uganda safaris. Located in Semuliki National Park, Western Uganda, the Sempaya Hot Springs, also often referred to as the Semuliki Hot Springs, are the most powerful natural hot springs and comprise male and female. They are suitably located in the lush green vegetation in Semuliki and remain the iconic attraction most tourists come to explore.

The Sempaya Hot Springs derive their name from the Kiswahili word “Sehemu Mbaya.” The name refers to the difficult side owing to the challenges faced when the Fort Portal-Bundibugyo road was being constructed on the ridges of the Rwenzori Mountains. The two unique hot springs include male “Bintente” and female – Nyansimbi. The female and male hot springs are found in various locations, but it is possible to explore all on a guided nature walking excursion in the Semuliki.

The Geology of Sempaya Hot Springs

The Sempaya Hot Springs are part of the geothermal features, and they are popular for their power levels. The temperatures rise to even 100 degrees Celsius, with the capability to boil eggs or some plantain within 10 minutes. The female, Nyansimbi, is the most powerful hot spring, and often, females visit it seeking infertility healing powers. The pregnant women flock to the female Sempaya Hot Spring mainly to ask the mother spirit to grant them a smooth delivery during childbirth.

The male Sempaya is recognized as a sacred shrine of a male god. Visitors can take about an hour to navigate through the woodlands and explore the male Sempaya Hot Springs. Locals treasure this section of the Sempaya for wealth, with most men confining themselves in the area with their sacrifices.
