Rwanda announced discounted gorilla permits for foreign residents and East African residents ready to visit mountain gorillas in volcanoes national park. The discounted permits will be allowed starting 1st January to 31st May 2026 and 1st November to 31st December 2026. The permit for foreign resident costs $500 and for East Africans costs $200. Kindly note that the above rates are effective for the low season, the standard gorilla permit costs remain as follows; for foreign Non residents costs $1500 per visitor, for foreign Residents costs $1000 per visitor and $500 for East African residents and for Rwanda citizens permit costs $200 per person.

Dos and don’ts to follow for a sustainable gorilla tracking activity

Before visitors embark on a gorilla tracking activity, game rangers take them through rules and regulations for a positive experience and these include;

  • One of the essential items to carry during gorilla tracking is packing along a rain jacket/poncho because the weather changes anytime
  • Do not smoke in the presence of gorillas.
  • Set your cameras in low light and no flash photography is allowed.
  • Do not litter in the park during tracking
  • In case you want to use the toilet, ask the ranger to advise you accordingly because the waste is supposed to be buried 30 cm deep
  • It is required to use water proof hiking boots and gaiters for a better tracking
  • A minimum of 8 visitors is allowed per gorilla group
  • Always keep your voices low in the presence of gorillas

Always keep a distance of about 7 meters away from the gorillas.
