Rhinos Introduced to Kidepo Valley National Park

Rhinos introduced to kidepo valley national park. This marks a major milestone for conservation of black and white Rhinos in Uganda. Rhinos are returning to kidepo valley national park after these animals were hunted down due to poaching and political unrest that happened in the past. The rhinos will be roaming freely in the fenced sanctuary. The 18.2 square kilometre fenced sanctuary is a critical step toward achieving Uganda’s National Rhino Conservation and Management Strategy plan restoring rhinos to protected landscapes where they once existed.

Thanks to Uganda Wildlife Authority, Wild Landscapes international, Great Plains Foundation, Rhino recovery fund and Northern Rangelands Trust partners for making this a dream come true. The project is looking forward to see the introduction of twenty black Rhinos and twenty white Rhinos.  The Rhinos will be relocated from ziwa Rhino sanctuary to kidepo valley national park. This will boost tourism conservation in the Karamoja region. What a comeback for Rhinos to kidepo!

Kidepo valley National Park is located in Karamoja district, the park borders South Sudan to the northwest and Kenya to the east. This national park features over 77 mammal species and 476 bird species.

Kidepo valley national park is uganda’s remote and isolated national park making it a true safari gem with its Narus valley a hot spot for viewing wildlife.

Kidepo valley national park will be considered as a big five safari destination where all the big five animals are spotted. These include; Leopards, African elephants, Lions, Buffalos and Rhinos.

What to see in kidepo valley national park

kidepo valley national park is an exceptional safari destination that has lots of attractions and these include hiking mount Morungole, hot springs in kanangorok, visiting the Karamojong community, Ik people and a variety of wildlife that is not spotted anywhere like rhinos cheetahs, Burchell’s zebra, Rothschild giraffes, oribi, eland, klipspringer, bat eared foxes, side striped jackal, Jackson’s hartebeest and ostrich birds the fastest and largest bird in the world.

How to get to kidepo valley national park to visit Rhinos

To get to kidepo valley national park, the park can be reached by both Air and Road transport. Driving to kidepo gives first hand sights of unseen Uganda since the park is located in the far north of the country. Driving to kidepo valley national park has several routes but the shortest route to kidepo is through kampala-karuma-gulu-kitgum and reach kidepo covering about 571 km and about 10 hours. It is advisable to travelers to have overnight stays in gulu or kitgum to avoid much exhaustion and safety.

The fastest way to get to kidepo valley national park is by organised domestic flights that takes about 2 hours from kajjansi airstrip in Kampala. These domestic flights are arranged by Aero link Uganda.

Best time to visit kidepo valley national park for Rhinos

This national park located in semi arid region that receives hot temperatures is visited all year round, the dry season starts from June to august and December to February which is characterised with clear skies and wet season that starts from April to may and September to late November is as well ideal for game viewing.

Uganda is now a leading safari destination for Rhinos, earlier this year the Uganda wildlife Authority made the first ever successful translocation of 4 southern white rhinos from Ziwa rhino sanctuary to Ajai wildlife reserve in a bid to restore rhino species in Uganda. we are experiencing another historical achievement of introducing black and white rhinos to kidepo valley national park.
