Day 1: Gishora Drum Sanctuary and Karera Waterfall

Your cultural journey begins when your guide from Bujuku tours & travels picks you up from your hotel in Bujumbura at exactly 6:00AM in the morning. You’ll travel in a comfortable safari vehicle, good for enjoying the scenic landscapes as you climb the central highlands toward Gitega. The road to Gishora passes through rural hills, banana groves, and traditional villages. Your guide will share background stories about Burundi’s kingdoms, agriculture, traditions, and the history of the drum sanctuary.

Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed to one of Burundi’s most important cultural heritage sites. The fresh hill air and sounds of rural life make the perfect scenery for a deep cultural immersion.

After the performance, your guide takes you through the sacred grounds and you will visit; the sacred drums that are never beaten, historical sites connected to Burundi’s monarchy, temples and ceremonial spaces, traditional royal house. After your visit at the Gishora drum sanctuary, you will go for lunch either at a local restaurant in Gitega or you will have a pre-prepared packed meal. This is a great moment to relax, enjoy the fresh climate of the highlands, and reflect on the morning experience at Gishora Drum Sanctuary.

After you have had lunch and relaxed, you will set off for Karera waterfalls a journey that takes approximately one hour which is a distance of 70km. You will arrive at the spectacular Karera Waterfalls. Spend 1-2 hours hiking through the lush, protected reserve to view the four cascading falls, with the main Karera fall plunging dramatically from the cliffs.

You will return to Bujumbura for an overnight and prepare for the next activity on your travel itinerary or go to your next destination in Uganda
