Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve

Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve is one of the best places to explore on a Uganda tour. This wildlife reserve is a hidden gem of its own and is located in Western Uganda. Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve was created in 1980 and covers an area of 87 sq. km, hosting a wide range of wildlife. It was officially declared a Wildlife Reserve in 2002.

Kabwoya Wildlife Reserve lies between the Blue Mountains of the Congo and Lake Albert. The reserve is surrounded by Kyangwali, Kabwoya, and Buseruka. It is strategically located in the region with breathtakingly spectacular views of Lake Albert and the surrounding areas.

In 1963, Kabwoya was set aside primarily for conservation purposes. A section of it was declared a Controlled Hunting Area. It represented a section of the 227km Kaiso-Tonya Controlled Hunting. By then, this hunting area served as a migration route on the Eastern Lake Albert shores between Toro Reserve and Murchison Falls National Game Park. Huge herds of the Defassa waterbucks, Jackson’s hartebeests, buffaloes, and Uganda Kobs had a connection with the Kaiso-Tonya.

The majority of the wildlife disappeared due to poaching practices in the area, especially following the long civil war. Other animals dispersed to other locations, considering the competition created by cattle keepers. Kabwoya is comprised of 2 zones, and they are separated by the Hohwa River near Budongo Forest.
