Reptile Park in Burundi: The Reptile Park is a small wildlife attraction located in Bujumbura city. Despite the name, it’s often considered part of the Musée Vivant (Living Museum of Bujumbura), essentially functioning more like a small zoo rather than a separate reptile sanctuary. The Reptile Park was gazette and formed in the year 2002 as part of efforts to preserve Burundi’s biodiversity and raise awareness about wildlife conservation, offering a unique, interactive experience.
The reptile park is located in a small in the rural province of rumonge, in Bujumbura city along the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The park is famous for its snake handlers and reptile enthusiasts who have been handling these reptiles for the past years.
The museum was founded on 13th October, 1977 covering an area of 3 hectares of the park in the downtown of Bujumbura. However, in December 2016, the zoo sheltered 6 crocodiles, one monkey, one leopard, two chimpanzees, three guinea fowls, a tortoise, an antelope, and a number of snakes and fish. Various Burundian Craftsmen had workshop on the museum’s premises, whereas several distinguished trees stand in the park, alongside a reconstruction of a tradition Burundian House.
The Living Museum of Bujumbura is not merely a sanctuary for animals. It also offers a platform for local Burundian artisans to showcase their craft, with several workshops dotting the museum premises. Here, visitors can witness the creation of traditional Burundian art and perhaps even take a piece home as a tangible reminder of their journey.
The number of visitors to the museum reverted in the aftermath of the 2015 Burundian unrest, following a massive decline in the number of tourists to the country. Suddenly the park cannot win much approvals from people neither from the animal rights activist because it currently houses one chimpanzee, one leopard, various crocodiles and snakes, and some few antelopes in an untidy, dirty and exposed cages. The guinea pigs on sale at the entrance are the daily feeds for the carnivores, hence purchasing one leads to a graphic representation of the food chain.
The Reptile Park is not a major safari-style attraction, it’s more of a small, local zoo experience. If you’re already in Bujumbura and want something quick and unusual, it can be worth a stop. But if you’re expecting a large, well-developed wildlife park, it may fall short.
